The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) starts today in Dubai. We will keep an eye on climate related fact-checks and greenwashing in the coming weeks.

Agence France-Presse
Missing Context: The Earth has the lowest average CO2 levels in the last 600 million years.
"Yes, CO2 is low today compared to much of Earth's history," Hood said, but emphasised that this "is not really the point". "The climate and CO2 has never changed as rapidly as today, and this is the real problem."

Full Fact
Partly False: Myocarditis after a Covid-19 vaccine is a permanently damaging condition and 20% of cases lead to death within five years.
There is no evidence to support these death rates. Most myocarditis cases are temporary and mild and require no treatment.

Agence France-Presse
Misleading: Blood donations are tainted by Covid-19 vaccines.
Experts say messenger RNA (mRNA) and spike proteins in Covid-19 vaccines do not "taint" blood donated by vaccinated individuals, contrary to a misleading claim circulating both within Australia as well as abroad. They told AFP the vaccines are rapidly broken down once they have stimulated the body's immune response so it was "extremely unlikely" they would be present in donated blood.

The three pyramids of Giza were constructed an estimated 4,500 years ago. At the time of King Tut’s birth they were already roughly 1,000 years old.

Snopes
True: One day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus.
A day on Venus is the equivalent in time as 243 Earth days. A year, on the other hand, equates to 225 days on Earth.

PolitiFact
False: “In every single war that America has fought, we have never asked for land afterwards.”
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s assertion is undercut by two centuries of U.S. history, including land gains following wars against Mexico, Spain, Filipino rebels, Japan and Native American tribes.

#WTF?! What The Fact of the week

Snopes
True: Researchers have genetically modified cats such that they glow green under ultraviolet light.
In 2011, Mayo Clinic researchers genetically modified cats as part of a study involving feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV, the cat version of HIV). Those cats were also injected with a jellyfish gene responsible for bioluminescence — a common strategy used by scientists to track genes. Though the research objective was not to fluoresce cats, felines that give off a green glow under ultraviolet light were a byproduct of the study.
